I thought that I was having another one of my NyQuil induced visions when I received the following photos. Although the fairies that were making me gingerbread cookies were make-believe, the Why Not bar in New York City is not.
People had spoken to me of this bar before, yet nobody had actually been able to produce any documentation of its existence. Like a good urban legend, this place was the Keyser Soze of drinking establishments.
And, like all good urban legends, this one has a website: The Why Not Bar Website
You don’t see bars all that often where the latte machine is mounted to the outside of the bar. So old school. Check it out, it looks like they have two of them:

Akin to the Western Wall in Judaism, the Why Not bar is something of a holy site for those that pray to Lord Lattor. Ja-Shin and friends are devout followers.

Laura is one of the bartenders at Why Not bar. She handles her Whynatte smoother than a bobcat coated in castor oil.

On an unrelated note, Laura’s Myspace page reports that her favorite type of mollusk is the clam, with the squid running a close second. Fascinating.

“Ralph’s not my boyfriend…okay, maybe he’s my boyfrie…OKAY, he’s my boyfriend!”

Hey guys!! Well I am Laura the Bartender and firstly… thank you for making me famous while working in NYC!!! Second… i dont have a MySpace page hahaha. Maybe i have a clone out there or something lol.
Was great serving you guys and I will wave the Whynatte flag from sunny England where I am now living!
Laura, here at Whynatte we make up a lot of facts (myspace, historical, sociological, etc…). We don’t put much stock in telling the truth. That aside, thanks so much for being such a wonderful host to our friends and our cocktail. Too bad for us that you’re no longer in NYC, but I’m sure that you’re going to keep the Whynatte tradition strong in England. Where in England are you? I know that there are a few bars in England that have the Whynatte on the menu. Let us know! Thanks again, and keep in touch.
Hi Laura!! It’s Tom the hopeless regular from Why Not. We miss you!! Google Why Not bar and you’re indeed famous. Yesterday Reuben and Giselle and I were recalling how nice it was to have a lovely Brit behind the bar.
I hope all is well back in the UK with job, driving license, and plans for travelling the world!
I have a feeling that my “research in NYC dive bars” is almost complete — and when I quit my job to write my novel I’ll be sure to include a character based on the peregrinating and lovely itinerant barmaid from Bristol who put Why Not (and those Whynatte thingies) on the world map. Play the Beach Boys at one of those discotheques of yours.
Cheers,
Tom

Hey Tom
Awww bless you and the guys saying that! i miss New York sooo much and you can tell Joe the only reason I havent called is because one i have been working my tits off but also, I think I will probably get upset because of everything that has gone on… he will know what that means!
And that would wonderful to be included in a novel… wish I was better at English to understand those long words mind you!! haha
Aw say hi to all the guys for me. I may be back but will be at least 6 months before i am over hte pond… just singed a lease on a house, got a new job and need to save for whatever the future holds… thinking of driving across America and ending up in NYC for a few weeks!!!
Take care Tom x
hey tom i have bone to pick with you!!!! I am not on the Why Not website after all
( lol
Hi Laura,
No idea if for old-time’s sake you happen still to check in on this fun Whynatte site… but I had to spread the word overseas that tragically the Why Not Bar is closed. Just up and closed on me, all of a sudden and because I was away for a few days I didn’t even get the word before showing up thirsty the next afternoon. They even closed the lovely diner on the corner. And I was convinced they were just about to install a Jager machine so that they could serve Whynattes with their fantastic omelettes. I hope you are well!
