Jewish people, like myself, have a long tradition of trying to enter the hip-hop game. For instance, under the cover of the oh-so-creative name Tropical Jews, my friend Jacob and I used to lay down ill-timed verses in our friend Mike Honablue’s basement back in high school. Needless to say, our hip-hop careers never took off, and I have since found moderate success in the lactose trade. Jacob moved to Los Angeles, where he plays professional Lutz Ball (an obscure yet growing sport from the Balkans) and leads the entire Western league in unsanctioned penetrations.

So along comes Mike Posner, a name that you might recognize from a recent article in the NY Times regarding Sony’s expansion of its music publishing business. I was skeptical when Zee walked into my office a few months back, asking me to listen to Posner’s music. Mostly, because I’m skeptical of Zee and think that he may actually be a talking cyborg. Casting my doubts aside, I gave the music a listen, and was pleasantly surprised. It was like eating the musical equivalent of a perfectly braised short rib. Not since Rabbi Sugarman’s infamous Rosh Hashanah service of ’97 have I heard a fellow Hebrew rock the microphone like Mike Posner.
