Remember back in the Summer of 2007/2008 when Whynatte and Esperanza used to throw raging rooftop parties at bars around Atlanta? Neither do we, but apparently they were some of the best events ever. This was before there was even a Whynatte in the can, and we used to make the latte in my kitchen and then deliver it to the bars in milk jugs. This was back when a Whynatte was served piping hot, and poured from an urn that I’d “borrowed” from my grandparent’s house.

In light of the Great Whynatte Shortage of 2012, and the fact that there are nearly no Whynatte cans to be found until late next week, we’re taking it old school and throwing a vintage style rooftop party with freshly brewed latte and our good friends from Esperanza. Leave your troubles at home, because for one night, and one night only, we’re going to party like it’s 2007. We’re bringing the urn back out of retirement, dusting off the old espresso machine, and going back to our roots. Get ready for an old school Whynatte & Esperanza rooftop spectacular.

Well, I have some good news and I have some bad news…

First the good news:

Our internal market research shows that people enjoy pounding Whynatte shots, drinking it on its own, crossbow hunting, and in general telling their friends about it. The result has been people buying Whynatte, and buying more than we’d anticipated. For this, we give thanks. We’ve scheduled a massive production run of fresh Whynatte for mid-May, have updated cans hitting the market, as well as a lot of really exciting festivals, concerts and bar-mitzvah’s on the calendar. So that’s good.

Now the bad news:

Our estimates show that we will run out of Whynatte in approximately 1 week. We will not have more back in stock until Friday, May 25th. This means that there will be ~2 weeks where there will be no wholesale Whynatte to be procured. While most of the bars and retailers that carry Whynatte typically keep about a week or so of backstock on hand, the worldwide Whynatte supply is going to get pretty damn dry for a minute. Unfortunately, the latte gods dictate that one must scheduleth thy Whynatte production many weeks ahead of time, and mid-May is the soonest we can make the magic. I suppose that it’s a better problem to have than a warehouse full of goods we can’t sell, but I’m still filing it under “bad news.” It looks like there’s going to be a run on Whynatte, and we want you to get ahead situation.

If you enjoy drinking Whynatte, we recommend that you drink a ton of it before the town is totally dry. Also, prepare for withdrawals, coveting thy neighbors Whynatte, and black market Whynatte dealers charging an arm and a leg.

If you’re a bar or retailer, we recommend stocking up now. It’s first come first serve on everything that’s left, and we sincerly apologize if you’re unable to get your hands on any Whynatte for a week or two. Needless to say, we’d rather be able to sell things than not sell things, and we’ll make sure that everyone is restocked as soon as it’s back in stock.

Join us April 18th at The Vortex Little Five Points at 8pm to help raise some money for the Vortex’s longest employed worker, Larry Taylor! Larry’s been working for the Vortex for 18 of Vortex’s 20 years.  He just had hip surgery and we’re looking to help him pay some bills while he recovers.

A $40 buy-in will get you a seat in the tournament.  We will allow rebuys for the first 4 blind levels.  A portion of the money raised will go back to pay the top 3 spots.  As with most of our charity tournaments, 1.5 times the points will be awarded.

We’ve also got $5 raffle tickets for sale.  Over 30 local companies have contributed some amazing prizes.  We’ve got gift certificates for bars and restaurants, gift certificates to some of Atlanta’s best tattoo artists, and tons of other goodies from all sorts of businesses.

In anticipation of the upcoming Passover holiday, it seemed appropriate to write a post that has absolutely nothing to do with Passover. Instead, it has everything to do with a delicious Whynatte concoction that you’ll soon be seeing on a handful of menus around town. It goes by the name Mexican Mule, and it’s the featured drink for the month of April at Vortex in L5P and Midtown. We’ve been searching for quite some time for a tasty Whynatte / Tequila cocktail, but for the most part everything we’ve tried has been disastrous. Whynatte mixes well with nearly everything, but tequila’s been a real beast of burden (so to speak). Enter the Mexican Mule, the first legitimate Whynatte + tequila cocktail worth talking about Now, if we could only find a way to mix Whynatte and Gin, without it tasting like castor oil, we’d have nearly all of the major spirits covered.

If you’re feeling adventurous, here’s the Mexican Mule recipe for you to try at home. Pay extra attention to the specific amount of each ingredient, since there’s a fine line between tasting amazing, and tasting like broiled koala spleen.

Whynatte Mexican Mule
1.5 oz Silver tequila (Herradura or 1800)
1.5 oz Kahlua
2-3 oz of Whynatte over ice
Top with 2 dashes of Mexican Mole Bitters

With your help, in less than one week our good friends at 4th Ward Heroes will travel with Whynatte to the the 2012 SXSW Music and Media Conference in Austin, Texas. We’re going there with two goals: to showcase Atlanta Music, and to eat as many tacos as possible. SXSW is an annual event in Austin that brings together bands, brands, creative thinkers, movers, shakers, and a general smorgasbord of industry folks, in an effort to showcase up and coming talent. SXSW has become a major platform for musicians seeking national exposure and meaningful industry connections.

On Friday, March 16th, Whynatte, 4th Ward Heroes, and Criminal Records plan to produce a showcase featuring 10+ Atlanta artists at Gypsy Lounge from 7PM – 2AM. Check out the line up here – we’re showcasing a bunch of local bands that have been incredibly supportive of Whynatte over the years.

For the past two years Malissa at 4th Ward Heroes has gone completely out of pocket for these efforts, but unfortunately she’s unable to cover the cost this year. Rather than put the artists in what the industry refers to as a pay to play situation, we’re hoping that music lovers everywhere will help to cover costs. No donation is too small! Proceeds from the fundraising efforts will go first to covering production. It takes money to do this right. Rumor has it that Whynatte makes a brief appearance in this Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead. That would make sense, seeing as though the cast and crew were drinking Whynatte 24/7 while filming. Which would also make sense, seeing as though they were oftentimes filming in the dead-ass middle of the night and working 14 hours days back to back. The Whynatte came in handier than a handbag made of sewn together horse spleens.

Speaking of spleens, we’ll be posted up at Diesel in Virginia Highland (870 N Highland Ave) starting at 7:30pm this Sunday the 19th for a Walking Dead viewing party. Even if the scene with the Whynatte ended up on the cutting room floor, we’ll still drink plenty of Whynatte to make up for it, and make lasting memories with new and old friends alike.

There will be $5 Whynatte Fire in the Hole shots (Whynatte + Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey). Also, bring in a canned food item and/or purchase a Fire in the Hole, and you’ll get a raffle ticket. You may even get a homemade casserole made from your canned food, but it’s not likely.

The Fire in the Hole is one of those Whynatte shots that hit the scene, and then stuck like the tentacle of a giant squid to a 7-year old snorkeling with his family off the coast of Waikiki.

The Fire in the Hole is easier to make than it is to just drink water, so what we’re recommending is that you drink 8 full glasses of them day. The taste, well, it’s just f@#king delicious. Some people like to say that it tastes like Christmas in your mouth, but I’m Jewish so I wouldn’t know what Christmas tastes like. I can tell you for sure that it tastes nothing like Hanukkah, but that’s probably a good thing unless you like to drink things that taste like brisket. You can order a Fire in the Hole at tons of bars around Atlanta, a few in Charlotte, and a handful of others around the country. Feel free to order Whynatte online and mix a few up in the comfort of your solarium.

So, here’s the recipe:
2oz Whynatte Latte
1.5oz Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey

Mix ingredients, shake them with ice until they’re cold, and strain it into shot glasses.

Batting leadoff on Thursday 1/26: 4th Ward Heroes Presents Vonnegutt w/ Bosco and Killer the Savage, and sponsored by some black market latte brokers called Whynatte. As you know, I’ve been blowing my shofar over Vonnegutt for a good 3 years, and I’m happy to say that they’ve steadily continued their journey towards worldwide notoriety. These kids have been marinading on a new album like Kevin Rathbun marinades a ribeye, and once the album drops you won’t be able to open O Magazine without seeing them hobnobbing with foreign delegates and such. May as well see these guys now before they’re playing on Letterman. Oh wait, they already played Letterman.

The flyer has all the sordid details, so no need to rehashbrown it. There will be Whynatte drink specials, a solid sampling of skinny girls from the suburbs, and a packed house enjoying the show.

Batting cleanup is the highly touted SMKA 4-year anniversary party. SMKA has done for local music what Sarah Palin did for crazy; They’ve taken it to the next level and pushed the boundaries beyond what anyone thought was possible. These guys get more coverage from Creative Loafing than Whynatte gets from Latte Digest, and it’s well deserved. If you’ve never been to an SMKA / Whynatte event, I recommend wearing as much suede as possible, having a proper stretch beforehand, and having absolutely nothing planned for the following 72 hours.

Per every other SMKA show I’ve ever been a part of, countless local acts show up to perform, and their anniversary party should bring out a who’s who of the finest and meatiest local cuts. The lineup as posted is already something special, but don’t be surprised if the list of performers continues to blossom. Needless to say, the Whynatte is going to flow harder than your grandma trying to ride a zebra bareback.

If you had to choose between one of these two events, I’d have to recommend that you choose them both.

So we go 3 years without sponsoring a facial hair competition, and now we will have sponsored two in the past month. I told you about a month ago, on this very blog, that 2012 was going to be a big year for facial hair, and I wasn’t kidding. Mustache contests are the new black. I can totally get behind this new trend – I stay about at cleanly shaven as a full grown yak.

This Friday night, aka tomorrow, aka December 22nd, Whynatte’s involved in Slapsmas 2011 at Diesel in Virginia Highland. What’s “Slapmas” you might ask? You know what, I’m not really sure, but I do know that it’s going to be a really fun time, and that you’re encouraged to pimp slap your fellow customers as a sign of endearment. I also know that there’s going to be a mustache competition, which seems like good wholesome fun for the entire family. All I know, is that the last time I went to Diesel for a holiday party (Thanksgiving) I said I was stopping by for a drink, ended up having 20, was behind the bar mixing up my own shots (condoned by equally sauced bartender), and strolled out of Diesel with the board game Candy Land (I’ll bring that back to you guys tomorrow, promise).
